Fantasy Island: Promoting an imaginary Jersey (2016) (page 2)
"Penguins at Plemont" - This has a similar structure to the “Orca Safari” piece - it was drawn with that picture alongside. I thought the cave and waterfall are the most distinctive features of the bay and so they form the backdrop.

"Re-introduction of Wolves" - I had fun creating the wolf’s ambiguous expression. This might spice up Sunday walks with the family…

"Ride the Dunes" - My drawings of the camel were based on a beautiful sketch my father did for me a long time ago. I was very touched he was happy for me to recreate it here.

"Rue 66" - For those who like to imagine a bit of the Wild West out West.

"St Mary in the Fall" - This was created with endless Chet Baker playing. It’s influenced by mid-century New Yorker magazine covers.

"Sleeper Express" - You wouldn’t have much time to sleep on that route. It’s based on inter-war British railway posters.

"Storm Chase" - It took a long time to capture the swirl of this twister. The basic structure is of two triangles, the top one contorted in contrast to the geometric one below.

"To Space in Peace!" - Space race posters are the best – particularly the Soviet ones, whose artists seemed spurred on by their lack of available print making facilities. The launch date just happens to be the day before Sputnik’s.

"Toros." - In my experience, you really need to be chased by a very angry bull for it to be worth while, so this one is so pumped-up it’s bursting out of the confines of the picture. The low eye-line adds to its menace.

"St Ouen Saltflats" - Any detail would detract from the sense of distance and speed I wanted to have here. So this piece was created by constant removal of all visual ‘clutter’ from my original sketches.

"The Jersey Festival of Blossom" - I wanted to capture some pathos in the blossom. The red cartouche is for the artist’s stamp in a traditional Japanese woodblock print.
